Best free synth plugins: Vital, Surge XT, Dexed and more
Six free synth plugins worth installing as of October 2026: Vital, Surge XT, Dexed, Tyrell N6, TAL-NoiseMaker and Odin 2. What kind of synth each one is, what it runs on, and how to choose.
You do not need to spend money to get a capable synth. The six free plugins below cover four common approaches: wavetable, FM, analog-style subtractive and hybrid. Each one is free from its maker, and each runs on Windows and Mac. Facts are from the makers' own pages as of October 2026; check them before you download, because free tiers and formats change.
Vital
Vital is a spectral warping wavetable synth. Its Basic tier is free and includes 75 presets and 25 wavetables; paid tiers add more presets and wavetables. It runs on Windows 10 and later, macOS 10.15 and later on Intel or Apple Silicon, and Ubuntu Linux. Start here if you want to learn wavetable sound design.
Surge XT
Surge XT is a free and open-source hybrid synthesizer. It was first sold as a commercial product, then released under the GPL. Each of its scenes has three oscillators with 12 algorithms, from classic and wavetable to FM, string and audio input, and the factory library has over 2,800 patches. It comes as VST3 and CLAP on Windows, Mac and Linux, plus AU on Mac and LV2 on Linux.
Dexed
Dexed is a free, open-source synth closely modeled on the Yamaha DX7, an FM synthesizer. It loads DX7 cartridges (sysex files) and sends and receives DX7 sysex, so it doubles as a librarian for the hardware. It runs on Mac, Windows and Linux. Its current release, 1.0.1, comes as VST3 and CLAP, plus AU on Mac.
Tyrell N6
Tyrell N6 is a free virtual analog synth from u-he, built from ideas for a hardware instrument by Amazona.de. It has two oscillators plus noise and a ring modulator. It is currently a free 2025 beta, as VST3, CLAP and AAX on Windows and Mac, plus AU on Mac; a Linux beta is also available.
TAL-NoiseMaker
TAL-NoiseMaker is a free virtual analog synthesizer from TAL Software with 256 presets. It has three oscillators including a sub, self-resonating filters, built-in chorus, reverb and delay, and a bitcrusher. It comes as VST, VST3, AAX and CLAP on Windows and Mac, plus AU on Mac, and as VST and VST3 on Linux.
Odin 2
Odin 2 is a free, open-source, 24-voice synth from The WaveWarden. Its filters include emulations of the Moog ladder and Korg 35 designs, and you can use classic analog waveforms or draw your own. It comes as VST3 and CLAP, plus AU on Mac and LV2 on Linux.

How to choose
Pick by the kind of sound you want to make. Wavetable synths suit sounds that change over time; FM suits bells, metallic and percussive tones; subtractive, analog-style synths cover classic basses, leads and pads. The guide to wavetable, analog and sample synths compares the main kinds. Then check the format: Logic Pro needs AU, Pro Tools needs AAX, and many other DAWs load VST3.
Where Kiln fits
Kiln Synthesizer is our own paid synth: a wavetable synth with a bass engine, Chord Glide, Glass resonance and 624 factory presets, as VST3 and AAX on Mac and Windows, plus AU on Mac. Like every released Vitric plugin, it has a free 3-day trial with every feature available, so you can compare it with the free synths above on your own projects.
Questions
Is Vital free?
Yes. Its Basic tier is free and is, in Vital's words, the full synth with all features, with 75 presets and 25 wavetables; paid tiers add more presets and wavetables.
Which free synths work in Logic Pro?
Logic loads Audio Units. Surge XT, Dexed, Tyrell N6, TAL-NoiseMaker and Odin 2 all list AU for Mac on their makers' pages. Vital's page does not list its plugin formats, so check its download before you rely on it in Logic.
Are free synths good enough to make real music?
Yes. The synth matters less than knowing it well. Learn one deeply before adding more.
